Bleaching has damaged the world's northernmost coral reef in Japan in the latest example of a global phenomenon which scientists have attributed to warmer ocean temperatures. Healthy reefs protect shores from storms and offer habitats for marine life, but after severe bleaching, reefs degrade and the structures that the corals build erode, threatening the existence of ecosystems depending on them.
