World's smallest magnifying glass allows seeing single atoms

University of Cambridge researchers have created the world's smallest magnifying glass, which focuses light a billion times more tightly, down to the scale of single atoms. The team used highly conductive gold nanoparticles to make an optical 'picocavity,' small enough to fit only a single molecule. The findings could help develop light-based data storage devices.
