While many WhatsApp forwards are claiming that Rs500 notes with star symbol are not valid legal tender, we found reports carrying confirmation by the RBI that banknote with a star (*) symbol is identical to any other legal banknote and that it is genuine. We also came across a tweet by PIB reiterating that the viral claims are false.
