The semi-final encounter of EURO 1968 between hosts Italy and the Soviet Union was decided on a coin toss. Since the concept of a penalty shootout had not been invented at that time, the match which ended 0-0 after ninety minutes had to be decided using a toss. Italy won the toss and later went on to win the tournament.
