Study finds melanoma-killing compound in Antarctic sea squirts

US researchers have identified an Antarctic sea squirt species containing bacteria capable of producing a toxic compound that selectively kills melanoma cells without harming healthy human cells. Sea squirts are sac-shaped marine invertebrates that attach themselves to the seafloor. The study offers promising new directions for future skin cancer treatments.
