China bypasses SWIFT, makes ₹6 lakh payment to Malaysia for fruits

China completed its first outbound digital yuan payment to Malaysia, paying ₹6.05 lakh for a shipment of durian fruits by bypassing the global payments mechanism SWIFT. China Construction Bank made the payment in e-CNY, China's central bank digital currency, and saw its transaction clearing time reduced to 30 minutes. Transfers via SWIFT cost $25-35/transaction, with clearing fees of over 6%.
