Gharial population in Gandak rises over 1,000 after release of 31 hatchlings

A total of 31 gharial hatchlings have been born and released this breeding season along Gandak River in Bihar's Bagaha area. The data showed gharial population in the river basin increased from 10 in 2010-11 to over 1,000 now. Listed as critically endangered species, Bihar Forest Department and Wildlife Institute of India have been monitoring nests and supporting breeding efforts.
