Sonam Wangchuk once said he wrote to '3 Idiots' makers asking if 'Phunsuk Wangdu' was based on him, but got no reply. Referring to legal dispute between makers and Chetan Bhagat at the time, Wangchuk avoided involvement as he "didn't want people to think I was trying to get money". He sent the letter after legal window for compensation closed.
