How did Mars get its moons as per new NASA study?

A NASA study using supercomputer simulations suggested that Mars' moons, Phobos and Deimos, may have formed from asteroid fragments. A large asteroid passed close to Mars, and the planet's gravity tore it apart. The fragments thus formed were captured in elliptical orbits, eventually colliding and forming a debris ring around Mars. Over time, this ring coalesced into the two moons.
