After seizing control of Syria's capital Damascus, rebel leader Abu Mohammed al-Julani said, "Syria is being purified". He added that ousted President Bashar al-Assad's Syria had "become the world's leading source" of Captagon, an amphetamine-type drug. In a speech at the Umayyad Mosque, the rebel leader said Syria had become a place for "Iranian ambitions, where sectarianism was rife".
