Venezuela is prone to earthquakes because it lies along the highly active boundary between Caribbean and South American tectonic plates. While most of Venezuela is located on the South American Plate, its northern coast and Caribbean islands sit where these plates meet. Whenever stress builds up and the two tectonic plates slide past each other, earthquakes occur in the region.
