What is Merchant Discount Rate, that govt may allow on UPI?
Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) is a fee paid by merchants to banks or payment service providers each time a customer makes a digital payment. It is shared among the cardholder's bank, the merchant's bank, and the UPI network. The Finance Ministry has proposed removing the legal provision that bars banks and payment service providers from charging MDR on UPI transactions.
