Researchers explain why walking gets harder with age

Researchers at Flinders University and the University of Canberra found that walking becomes harder with age because the body gradually prioritises stability over efficiency. Older adults tend to stiffen their ankles with each step to improve balance when their feet hit the ground, but this reduces push-off power. As a result, their strides become shorter and walking speeds slow down.
