Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state has seen a major demographic shift due to Congress’ “appeasement politics.” He said that in 2011 Census, Muslims made up about 34% of Assam’s population, and excluding around 3% Assamese Muslims, "Bangladeshi-origin Muslims stood at nearly 31%." Sarma claimed that in 2027 Census, Bangladeshi-origin Muslim population could rise to close to 40%.
