Centre declines to support Karnataka's proposed anti-hate speech Bill

Union Home Ministry has declined to support Karnataka's proposed anti-hate speech Bill, stating that it "may not be necessary" and that existing criminal laws are adequate. The Bill was sent to the ministry for President's assent after Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot refused to clear it. The bill prescribes up to 7 years’ imprisonment and fines between ₹50,000 and ₹1 lakh.
