The turkey pardon tradition at White House is said to have begun in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln spared a turkey at his son Tad's request, who had become attached to the bird. Tad had pleaded with Lincoln to save it from becoming Christmas dinner. The tradition was later formalised, with George Bush making it an annual event in 1989.
