Although the American colonies voted for independence from Britain on July 2, 1776, it's July 4 which became the symbol of US independence. After the July 2 vote, Continental Congress continued debating the draft of the Declaration of Independence, which outlined the colonies' reasons for breaking from Britain. Congress formally approved and adopted the final text on July 4, 1776.
