Why is an F1 race called a 'Grand Prix'?

The term Grand Prix is French for 'grand prize' or 'great prize'. It signifies the highest level of international competition and is used in motorsports, sailing and equestrian events. The term was first applied to automobile racing in 1906 at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans. Today, it commonly refers to individual races in the Formula One World Championship.
