What is 'Devil's Fingers' fungus that smells like rotten flesh?

The 'Devil's Fingers' is a rare fungus that hatches from a gelatinous 'egg' which is the size and shape of a golf ball. As it grows, the red tentacles emerge, joined initially at the tip before transforming into a star shape. The fungus has a strong and unpleasant smell of rotting flesh, which attracts flies, beetles and slugs.
