The government has proposed to expand the list of cities eligible for a higher House Rent Allowance exemption under the old tax regime. Under the draft Income Tax rules, salaried taxpayers living in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad will be eligible for an HRA exemption of up to 50% of salary. The list already includes Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai.
