Gyanesh Kumar took charge as new Chief Election Commissioner on Wednesday, replacing Rajiv Kumar. He will oversee the conduct of Bihar Assembly election later this year and polls in Bengal, Assam, and Tamil Nadu next year. He is a Kerala cadre IAS officer from 1988 batch who retired as secretary of Ministry of Cooperation before being appointed as election commissioner.
