Protests have emerged across northern Mexico after President Sheinbaum opened the possibility of fracking in Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas to reduce US gas dependence. Activists, residents, and experts warn the practice threatens water supplies, causes environmental harm, and is financially unviable. Mexico currently imports 75% of its natural gas consumption.
