China warned the European Union against backing the 2016 ruling deeming China's expanded maritime claims in South China Sea "illegal" to ​prevent an impact on China-EU ties. "Europe is not a party to ⁠the South China Sea issue ​and has no right to comment ​on China's legitimate territorial sovereignty and maritime rights," ​it said. EU had called the ruling "landmark".
