R Madhavan's upcoming biopic GDN is based on one of India's most underrated self-taught industrial innovators, Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu. Naidu, born in 1893 near Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, is widely known as "Edison of India" and is credited with manufacturing India’s first electric motor. He had also founded Universal Motor Service, which revolutionised public transportation in southern India.
