About 1 in 8 babies born in New Zealand in 2024 had an Indian mother, according to birth registration data. Births to ethnically Indian mothers accounted for 2.8% of all births in 2008, rising to 3.5% in 2012, 7.9% in 2020, and 12.6% in 2024. The rise is driven by migration and growth of New Zealand's Indian community, researchers said.
