Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said ChatGPT's viral 2022 launch triggered a "ferocious commercial pressure race" among AI labs. "And then on top of that, there are geopolitical issues like the US-China race...So there's sort of multiple levels of...pressure to...move fast," he stated. He added that the ideal scenario would have been to build AGI "in a careful scientific way".
