Supreme Court, while hearing a plea challenging 2023 law on Election Commissioners' selection panel, said the third member on panel should be somebody who is a neutral person. "Why should it be a Minister from the Cabinet?" Justice Dipankar Datta asked the government. "It's not sufficient to be independent, but it has to appear to be independent," he added.
