How did Delhi's Jantar Mantar predict time long before smartphones?

Built in 1724, Delhi's Jantar Mantar used Samrat Yantra, a massive sundial, to tell time. Its edge points towards North Pole, tilted at Delhi's latitude. As Sun moves across sky, shadow of this triangle falls on curved scales on either side. Those scales are marked in hours and minutes. By reading where the shadow fell, people could tell the time.
