'Godfather of AI' Geoffrey Hinton said governments may have to provide 'universal basic income' (UBI) to citizens to mitigate effects of AI on jobs. UBI amounts to government paying a set salary unconditionally to citizens. The concept had picked up pace following COVID-19 pandemic. Many critics say UBI would be extremely costly and would divert funding away from public services.
