Crops irrigated with wastewater store drugs in their leaves: Study

Scientists at John Hopkins University found that crops irrigated with treated wastewater can possess traces of pharmaceuticals. Studying tomatoes, carrots and lettuce, they found tomato leaves held over 200 times more pharmaceutical residue than fruits, while carrot leaves had about seven times more than edible roots. Lettuce also showed lower concentrations in edible tissues after a 45-day study.
