India's illegal gold imports jump 1,500% after duty hike

India's illegal gold imports surged to their highest level since 2023 in the September quarter, following a hike in import duties, as per World Gold Council. Informal shipments jumped over 1,500% to 50 metric tonnes from 3 tonnes a year earlier. Higher taxes have historically encouraged gold traders to use unofficial channels, including smuggling, to avoid paying duties.
