According to data released by the Income Tax Department around 8.80 crore income tax returns have been filed for Assessment Year 2025-26 as of January. Data showed nearly 53 lakh returns are still pending for processing, many of which are linked to refund claims. Stricter verification checks, high filing volume and data mismatches are among the reasons behind the delay.
