After five months of stalled negotiations for release of 53 US Embassy staffers held hostage in Iran, US launched Operation Eagle Crew in April 1980. The operation couldn't move beyond the first phase due to a dust storm and failed military coordination. On their way out after aborting the mission, an RH-53 helicopter collided with fuel-laden C-130, killing eight officers.
