Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in Budget 2026 that a new 'National Institute of Design' will be established in the eastern region of India "to boost design education and development" in the region. She stated that this institute will be established as the "Indian design industry is expanding rapidly, and yet there is a shortage of Indian designers."
