How did NASA make Artemes II's heat shield work despite flaws?

Artemis II's Orion spacecraft had a less permeable shield than its predecessor Artemis I. Instead of redesigning shield and delaying the mission, NASA engineers altered the re-entry trajectory for Artemis II to maintain consistent heat during descent, preventing gas from getting trapped under an outer char layer and reducing risk to the capsule and crew.
