Bioluminescence is the production and emission of light by a living organism. The light, usually blue or blue-green in colour, is produced by the energy released from chemical reactions occurring inside (or ejected by) the organism. Bioluminescence is rare in ecosystems on land, but common in the marine environment. It is typically used to warn predators, detect prey, and communicate.
