Why do we always see the same side of the Moon?

The Moon is tidally locked to Earth, meaning it rotates on its axis at exactly the same rate it orbits Earth. As a result, the same hemisphere always faces us. The far side, often called the "dark side", receives just as much sunlight but remained unseen by humans until the Soviet Luna 3 probe photographed it in 1959.
