According to an investigative report by The New Yorker, CEO Sam Altman's ouster from OpenAI in 2023 was driven by internal allegations of lying and deception, compiled and presented to the board by then-chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. It accused Altman of misrepresenting facts to board members and deceiving them about internal safety protocols. Altman was rehired in just five days.
