Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in Budget 2026 that one girls' hostel will be established in every district of the country with the help of VGF (Viability Gap Funding) or capital support. The minister said these hostels will be established as "prolonged hours of study and laboratory work pose some challenges" for girl students in higher education and STEM institutions.
