Kerala Health Minister K Muraleedharan on Sunday said the government had intensified surveillance after a four-year-old child died of Shigella infection, marking the first reported fatality from the disease in the state. Three children were admitted to a Kozhikode hospital with the infection, of whom two have recovered, he added. Shigella is a bacterial infection that affects the intestines.
