Same-sex partners can be nominated to make medical decisions for each other: Centre

Centre has backed allowing people in same-sex relationships to nominate partners to make medical decisions if they become incapacitated. In a Delhi High Court filing, the Health Ministry said excluding such partners due to sex, gender or sexual orientation lacks medical or ethical basis. It, however, maintained that the term "spouse" under Indian marriage laws applies only to heterosexual couples.
