About 4,36,800 babies are born annually in state-run facilities in Tamil Nadu and thus would be eligible for a one-gram gold ring under the state government's 'Thaimaaman' scheme, PTI reported. This translates to roughly 36,400 beneficiaries a month and 1,197 a day. At current gold prices of ₹13,600/gram, the rings would cost ₹594.05 crore annually, against a ₹755.83-crore budget allocation.
