Fool's mate is the fastest checkmating pattern that can occur in chess. It can happen after just two moves. It's possible to achieve it only if white makes opening mistakes, and that's why people call it fool's mate. Only black pieces can deliver it in two moves, although white can also win in three moves in a similar fashion.
