Why is India spending ₹650 crore to drill a single deepsea oil well?

India has approved the ₹84,084-crore Samudra Manthan National Offshore Exploration Scheme to encourage deepwater oil and gas exploration and reduce dependence on imported fuel. Under the scheme, the Centre will fund up to 50% of drilling costs, capped at ₹650 crore per deepwater or ultra-deepwater well. The support covers 60 high-risk exploration wells over the next five years.
