Taiwan's Defence Ministry said it spotted 16 Chinese warplanes near the island around the same time Chinese President Xi Jinping met the Taiwanese Opposition leader Cheng Li-wun in Beijing. Li-wun from the KMT Party visited China in an effort to hold peace talks. During the talks, Xi had said that China will not accept or tolerate Taiwan independence.
