Tiny vortices spotted on the Sun for the first time

short by Daisy Mowke / on Tuesday, 8 September, 2026
Scientists have observed tiny plasma vortices on Sun's surface for the first time using Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope. The swirls, caused by Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, form near magnetic regions and may twist magnetic field lines, helping explain how energy accumulates before solar flares. Researchers say they could also improve understanding of magnetic energy transport and plasma mixing.
