Study finds gut bacteria that causes intoxication without drinking

A new study found that gut bacteria like Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae drive alcohol production in patients with auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), that causes intoxication without drinking alcohol. They found that these bacteria ferment sugars into ethanol in the intestine in patients with ABS. Study also suggested that a stool-based test could offer an alternative for diagnosing ABS.
