Two new minerals may hold vast water deep in Earth: Study

Scientists discovered two new iron oxyhydroxide minerals in Earth's lower mantle, ~2,900 km beneath the surface, that may store water equivalent to 1-2 Pacific Oceans. Found stable under extreme conditions, they likely formed when an early magma ocean cooled. The study, published in Nature Geoscience, sheds light on Earth's water retention.
