How did April Fools' Day begin?

Pope Gregory XIII created Gregorian calendar in 1582 and advocated starting the new calendar on January 1. However, the calendar shift from Julian to Gregorian began on April 1. Many hesitated to accept the shift and continued to use Julian calendar. People who didn't adhere to new calendar were deemed dumb by those who did and were called 'April fools'.
