Designation of a language as classical is intended to recognise its historical significance. Criteria for approval include high antiquity of its early texts and a body of ancient literature/texts. These languages receive several benefits, such as establishment of Centers of Excellence for advanced research on each classical language and enhanced awareness and preservation of the language.
